Day 3 Early morning departure back to Windhoek for your private charter flight to Etosha Park. Etosha, meaning "Great White Place", is dominated by a massive mineral pan. The pan is part of the Kalahari Basin, the floor of which was formed around 1000 million years ago. The Etosha Pan covers around 25% of the National Park. The pan was originally a lake fed by the Kunene River. However the course of the river changed thousands of years ago and the lake dried up.The pan now is a large dusty depression of salt and dusty clay which fills only if the rains are heavy and even then only holds water for a short time. This temporary water in the Etosha Pan attracts thousands of wading birds including impressive flocks of flamingos. The perennial springs along the edges of the Etosha Pan draw large concentrations of wildlife and birds.
Etosha National Park is one of Southern Africa's finest and most important Game Reserves. Etosha Game park was declared a National Park in 1907 and covering an area of 22 270 square km, it is home to 114 mammal species, 340 bird species, 110 reptile species, 16 amphibian species and, surprisingly, one species of fish. Believed to have originated over 12 million years ago as a shallow lake, Etosha is said to have the tallest Elephants in Africa, (up to 4m at the shoulder), Etosha is recognised as being one of the last wild sanctuaries of the endangered Black Rhino.
A San (Bushman) legend about the formation of the Etosha Pan tells of how a village was raided and everyone but the women slaughtered. One woman was so upset about the death of her family she cried until her tears formed a massive lake. When the lake dried up nothing was left apart from a huge white pan. The game viewing in Etosha National Park is excellent; you can expect to see many buck species, elephant, giraffe, rhino and lions. More fortunate visitors will see leopard and cheetah. A series of waterholes along the southern edge of the pan guarantee rewarding and often spectacular viewing!
Arrive at Mushara Outpost. The Mushara Outpost accommodates 16 guests in custom made tent like structures, of wood and canvas which are nestled on the banks of an ancient dry river bed known to the locals as an "omaramba". The Lodge is all about old fashioned hospitality with warm, friendly and personalized service on the door step to the magical Etosha Pan National Park. Each tent is set on a wooden deck, a meter and a half above the ground, giving us a different perspective of the bush. Large glass windows from ceiling to floor allow for plenty of air movement during night. For the very warm afternoons, air conditioning adds an extra level of comfort. 2 nights at Mushara Outpost(Fl)
Day 4&5 Morning departure and onto the Caprivi Strip! The Caprivi Strip is a narrow strip of land in the far northeast of Namibia, about 400 kilometers long. The East Caprivi bordered by the Kwando, Linyanti, Chobe and Zambezi Rivers is a region of swamps and flood plains. It was obtained from Great Britain by Germany in 1890 to give German South West Africa (now Namibia) access to the Zambezi River west of Victoria Falls. The Caprivi is the wettest region in Namibia with its high rainfall and a number of major rivers like the Okavango, Kwando and Zambezi; all of them originating from Angola and draining an enormous area. There are also some smaller rivers like the Linyanti and the Chobe.
The abundance of water in the Caprivi sustains a large variety of animal and bird species. This is another un-spoilt African wilderness, lush bushveld vegetation and known for its elephants and Buffalo. Especially numerous are the elephants, though not easily spotted through the dense vegetation. The wildlife is being protected in a couple of reserves (Bwabwata, Mudumu, Lizauli, Mamili). There are no fences, so the animals can roam freely across the borders of the neighboring countries of Botswana and Zambia. Susuwe Island Lodge offers our visitors the opportunity to experience closely a wild and untouched island of Africa. Situated in North-Eastern Namibia, the island is in the remote Kwando River - a permanent water source which nourishes delicate ecosystems and sustains varied game and birdlife. Relaxation, privacy and comfort are paramount here.
Susuwe Island Lodge is built to incorporate the riverine forest - the main complex has lofty canopy viewing decks overlooking endless savannahs, glistening lily-studded wetlands and ancient Kalahari woodlands, as well as a fire pit, spacious lounge and dining areas, curio shop and small reference library. Game sightings in this cradle of rivers could include vast herds of roaming elephant and buffalo, lion, hippo, leopard, sable, roan, lechwe and puku for example. Night drives at Susuwe offer an even closer insight into the intrigue of the African bushIt is on the banks of Botswana’s fabled Stolen River, that you will find Savute Safari Lodge. The now dry Savute channel is part of the dynamic Savute eco system renowned for its large concentration of elephant and lion and their troubled relationship.
Savute’s signature expansive glass sliding doors and viewing decks were inspired by the striking panorama. Whether seen in the dry season when it can appear desert-like and barren beyond belief or after the rain on one of those crystal clear days across the vivid green of new grass, the impression is always breathtaking.Six spacious brick and thatch suites equipped with double bathroom, bedroom, lounge and wooden viewing deck each with private plunge pool offer our visitors the opportunity to merge unhurriedly with Africa's timeless evolution of hazy days and star-studded nights. Mosquito nets, overhead fans and hairdryers as well as generated electricity are provided. 2 nights at Savute Safari Lodge(Fl)

Day 8&9 The Okavango Delta has three distinct sectors, The Pan-Handle - a +/- 70km stretch of the Okavango River from where the river enters Botswana until it fans out; the Permanent swamp is the area that has water throughout the year and the Seasonal Swamp where the annual flood plays the major role in influencing the water levels. An extension of the Great African Rift, the entire region lies in what is called Kalahari Basin .It occupies 6,000 square miles of the surface area of Northern Botswana. The source of this great alluvial fan stems from the northern provinces of Angola, where the rains gather to form a mighty river that floods into the Delta on an annual basis and eventually runs dry in the Kalahari Desert.
Into the permanent swamp of the Okavango Delta, flows on average 11 billion cubic meters of water, this is enough water to suit the needs of an industrialized nation. The region is extremely flat, the gradient varying a mere 35 meters from the Panhandle in the north, to Maun in the south. It is so very flat it is rumored that the very large termite mounds are the highest landmarks in the Okavango Delta. It is said that termite mounds are the starting points of the Delta Islands. Through evaporation transpiration, salts are deposited on the periphery of the mounds base. Over a period of thousands of years, the process is repeated and in so doing, an island is born. An estimated 97% of the water that enters the delta is lost under the hot Botswana sun.
Neighbouring the Moremi Game Reserve in the south-east of the Okavango Delta, Chitabe Concession is 28, 000 hectares of a multiplicity of habitats, from savannah to tree-filled islands and floodplains. The Okavango Delta in Botswana is one of the world’s largest river systems. The Okavango River, born in the uplands of Angola to the Northwest, flows into and fans out across the Kalahari Desert to form and immense inland delta of lagoons, channels and palm filled islands. The fragile ecosystems remain one of the world’s unspoilt and beautiful wildernesses where a vast diversity of animals and birds can be seen. All this makes for amazing wildlife sightings. Botswana’s magnificent Okavango Delta is a maze of lagoons, lakes and hidden channels covering an area of over 16,000 square km in flood and shrinking to less than 9,000 square km in the dry season. Trapped in the parched Kalahari sands the fresh water oasis attracts wildlife that depends on the permanent waters of this unique wilderness.
